Health Anxiety

Anxiety and physical symptoms, physical symptoms and anxiety… the more symptoms you have, the more you worry, and the more you worry, the more physical symptoms you have! Many people, both with and without chronic conditions, develop “health anxiety.” Even when told by a health provider that “you’re fine,” health anxiety can leave us feeling helpless and unsure of where to go next.

Health anxiety can lead to stress, interrupted sleep, and frequent visits for treatments and tests which don’t really help. It’s worth getting support and speaking to a medical professional about it. Rebecca Cherry, MD, MPH, offers holistic and compassionate treatment at Deep Well Health Care LLC in Elkins Park Pennsylvania, as well as via telemedicine. Anxiety Q & A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is our body’s way of alerting us to potential danger. When a person is in a threatening situation, anxiety and fear can be lifesaving, prompting us to defend ourselves or to flee for safety. However, when the threat, or stress, is low-intensity and chronic, anxiety can cause more problems than it solves.

Anxiety can develop at any age, sometimes in response to an identified stressful life event. In addition to the discomfort of the emotion, anxiety can also cause physical symptoms and worsen conditions like chronic pain, high blood pressure, and irritable bowel syndrome.

What are the symptoms of anxiety?

The symptoms of anxiety may vary widely, ranging from panic disorders to irritable mood to physical pain. Some of the more common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Difficulty controlling worrisome thoughts
  • Sensing impending danger or doom
  • Feeling restless or nervous
  • Increased heart rate
  • Rapid breathing
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sweating
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Muscle tension and pain

If anxiety is interfering with your daily activities, causing physical symptoms, or worsening pre-existing health conditions, call Dr. Cherry to learn how to manage anxiety and improve your quality of life.

How is anxiety treated?

At Deep Well Health Care, Dr. Cherry offers hypnosis to help address both the causes and the symptoms of anxiety. Patients learn to effectively calm themselves, as well as to adjust the patterns of thought and behavior that might trigger their anxiety in the first place.

During hypnosis, you may experience a relaxed state similar to what people experience during meditation, remaining fully awake as you learn to reshape your emotional responses.

Dr. Cherry can help you find relief from the symptoms of anxiety. To learn more about clinical hypnosis treatment for anxiety, call Deep Well Health Care or use the online booking tool to schedule an appointment today.
